Opponents of Arizona’s new law targeting illegal immigrants have a weak argument—the potential for abuse. Every power held by government has the potential for abuse. Taxation, the present power to detain and arrest, even traffic laws could potentially be abused by some bureaucrat or enforcement officer. Should we, therefore, strip government of all power? Do you want to live in anarchy? Continue reading
Dylan wouldn’t be shackled to the expectations of the adoring throngs. He progressed as an artist to the chagrin of his folk-loving fans. He used to divide his concerts into two sections. First, he would play the old songs while accompanying himself on acoustic guitar. Then, he would switch to electric guitar and sing his rock songs. The audience would cheer during the folk set and boo during the rock set… Continue reading

I used to spend two weeks every summer with them. The days, as today, were oppressively hot, but I spent them playing in the shade of fruit trees in their backyard. I loved going into town with grandad. He would get a haircut or buy some building supplies for a project or he would take granny to her weekly beauty shop appointment or take her to buy canning supplies. Continue reading
Tragic deaths were in the news and on my mind this week. The death of a utility worker south of Fort Worth who drilled into a natural gas pipeline triggered this item. This was just the latest in a string of tragedies, in which everyday people go to work to support their families and don’t return. There was also the bulldozer operator who hit a gas pipeline and the eleven oil rig workers who died in the gulf… Continue reading

What is fifty feet high, 22 feet wide, one foot thick and made of brushed aluminum, weighing 24,000 pounds? Man With Briefcase. Addiction therapy always has the goal of arming the addict with the tools to abstain from the addictive substance. Do you really think that therapists are working to get these addicts
to abstain from sex? I don’t think so. What would be the goal, then. To get them to abstain from adultery… Continue reading
Oil rig workers blame a methane gas bubble for the explosion on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, this according to the Associated Press. Of course, methane gas can be a clean and efficient source of energy as Texans well know. In the wrong place, however, say in an oil pipeline, methane can be a disaster… Continue reading
Of course, you don’t have to be a seasoned professional to see that the Dallas Mavericks are psychologically damaged. It all stems from their collapse to the Miami Heat and the NBA officials in game three of the NBA Finals a few seasons back. The Mavericks dominated the Heat for two games and the first half of game three. It looked like they could sweep Miami… Continue reading
