Conan O’Brien—Please Stop Whining

After watching Conan O’Brien on 60 Minutes, I understand Conan’s position more clearly. (Nice job 60 Minutes.) He had worked for NBC for many years, they approached him five years ahead of time and asked him to stay with the network with the expectation of receiving the Tonight Show, Leno graciously handed over the reins and wished him well, his years of slaving for NBC had landed him the most prestigious gig in television, and a few short months later he was forced out.
I get it. Conan got $32 million. Poor fellow. Now he’s got a new show with a big paycheck. My heart bleeds for him.
The real villains are the suits at NBC. There style of management is play not to lose instead of play to win. It appears that their main focus at that time was to keep Conan on the team so that he wouldn’t switch to a competitor and score against NBC. That focus might have blinded them to Leno’s dominance in his time slot. If they had focused on their strongest assets, the Tonight Show being the strongest in late night, they would have tried to find another way to keep O’Brien.
Back to Conan; if I had his $32 million and he had a feather up his butt, we’d both be tickled.
