These two artists brought their considerable talents together to create a mood that is predominantly melancholy. They conjure up whimsical imagery to guide me into a world of soulful reflection and pain and beauty.

My favorite song on the album is Killing the Blues.

“Somebody said they saw me
swinging the world by the tail
bouncing over a white cloud
killing the blues.”

I also enjoyed Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On) and Through the Morning, Through the Night and Stick With Me Baby. Rounding out this entertaining album are four more lovely collaborations and three songs that might grow on me.

This duo is even more unlikely than Loretta Lynn and Jack White. The difference being in the mood set by the twosomes. Lynn and White produced a joyous and fun sound. I own both albums. I think of Van Lear Rose as a beer drinking, dancing collection and Raising Sand as music to sink back into my overstuffed easy chair while nursing a scotch on the rocks.

Check out Raising Sand By Alison Krauss and Robert Plant.
