Bob Dylan has to be one of the most courageous musical artists of all time. In the beginning of his career, he was a well known folk singer-song-writer. He had a large, loyal following. Most artists would have milked that success for all it was worth for the rest of their lives. Think of all the classic rock bands who tour with the same repertoire they’ve played for twenty-five years.

Dylan wouldn’t be shackled to the expectations of the adoring throngs. He progressed as an artist to the chagrin of his folk-loving fans. He used to divide his concerts into two sections. First, he would play the old songs while accompanying himself on acoustic guitar. Then, he would switch to electric guitar and sing his rock songs. The audience would cheer during the folk set and boo during the rock set. Dylan persisted. Most artists would have caved in to the demands of their so-called fans. Not Dylan. He just turned up the volume on the amps to drown out the cacophony of those who would hold him back.

In this video you can see the confidence with which Dylan sings—and sometimes shouts his lyrics. He was and is one-of-a-kind. I have enjoyed his music for nearly forty years and have seen him in concert several times. I have never been disappointed by Dylan’s performance.

This is part of Dean Martin’s variety show. Goldie Hawn was a big hit on Laugh In at the time. I have been told that Dean Martin’s “drinking problem” was just an act. Supposedly, he had quit drinking and hadn’t drank for years. He must have been a great actor.

This video reminds me of when my family used to sit around the television and watch both Laugh In and Dean Martin’s show. Both shows were always fun.

Delbert McClinton has been playing the blues for a long time. Wikipedia claims he has been performing since 1962. However, I heard him give an interview a few weeks ago, to Bret Dillan of KHYI 95.3 FM in Dallas, and I believe he said he began in the late 1950′s. Whichever is correct, Delbert is a natural blues man and still singing strong vocals in his late 60′s. Every Time I Roll the Dice will make you want to get up and dance.

Bob Dylan is the greatest song writer of his generation and the generation that followed. I know that’s subjective, but any way you measure talent Dylan comes out on top; longevity, relevance, complexity, layered meanings, etc…

This song was used in the movie, Wonder Boys, staring Michael Douglas, Robert Downey Jr., Katie Holmes, Tobey Maguire, and others. The previously named stars appear in this video. It’s fun, but lip sync is not Dylan’s forte.
